3 tips to soothe anxiety

However you live your life, at some point you'll come face to face with anxiety, for some it can even become chronic.

Having proven techniques for working with anxiety is essential.

Keep reading to know my top tips.

1. Embodied safety

Anxiety can move energy up and away from your legs.

Ground yourself by consciously bringing your attention to your feet.

Take a moment to feel into sensations in your feet. Notice the details. Are you wearing socks? Are they touching the ground?

Allow this to connect you with a sense of grounding and stability, an internal sense of safety.

2. Understand your state

Tune your attention inwards into your body.

Notice what's going on in your body, what sensations do you feel? Is your heart beating faster? Your breathing faster? Do your muscles feel tense or relaxed?

Notice all the signals and sensations your body is sending you.

3. Regulate

Start where you're at, not where you want to be.

With anxiety, you're increasing activation of the sympathetic nervous system. This is mobilising energy stores throughout the body. Start with movement to use the energy that's been building up, ideally something challenging (but if that's not possible, walking works too!).

Stretch to release muscle tension.

Eventually bring your energy down by focusing on slowing down your breaths and inviting in more stillness.

Each of these tips can work alone but they also work great together.

Practicing any of these tips will allow you to enter a more regulated state where you're able to soothe anxiety without pushing it away, instead developing resilience and giving yourself the space to be with it.

When you're able to sit with anxiety from a more regulated place, you can allow it to move through you and pass.

In this space, you're no longer overwhelmed by anxiety and able to see it from a new perspective..

You're able to listen to the message it might be trying to give you.

You can see yourself with compassion rather than judgement and become more present in your experience and in your body.

In this place, you get to move through the world with an internal sense of sense of strength.

You can listen to your own inner knowing and move forwards towards feeling free and creating a life you love.
