Is your peace reliant on external circumstance?

Being in places like this is wonderful and they can bring you a real sense of peace.

Who doesn’t love being surrounded only by the sounds of trees leaves gently rustling in the wind and birds singing?

The test of the practice though, is can you carry that peace with you?

Once while travelling, I told my sister “this town is making me feel off balance, I struggle to practice!”. We’d arrived in a very busy town, full of noise, people and busy-ness.

I thought I needed a quiet, slow environment to practice and wanted to escape to the ashram.

My sister disagreed. She asked me “well, do you want to only be the yogi on the mountain or the yogi in the marketplace?” …and I said “both” (because why choose one when you could have both, right?! 😂)

But the question always stayed with me - what’s the point of the practice if it doesn’t allow you to live more fully and be in the world with a greater sense of harmony, even within a certain degree of chaos?

Of course, if you want to go and live alone on a mountain, more power to you!

Personally though, I want to experience as much of this world as I can and feel just as ok in the chaos of the marketplace as I do in the peace of the mountains (or lakes in this case).

It’s more important to me to generate an internalised sense of peace that I can carry with me always, than rely on external circumstances.

Your practice should equip you to face whatever circumstances come up with a sense of resilience and harmony, rather than help you run away from them.

To me, this is essential.

Your practice should teach you to look inwards and and cultivate peace from within, wherever you find yourself.
