How I went from being too anxious for public speaking to calmly speaking on courses and being an invited speaker on events
A few years ago, I was terrified of public speaking.
My anxiety would rise, my face would turn red, my voice would shake, I’d get a knot in my throat and my mind would go blank.
I remember quite clearly giving a short talk to a yoga class about yogic philosophy, my heart was racing and I was sweating within seconds of beginning to speak!
Fast forward to now and I’m excitedly taking on speaking opportunities at events and speaking on courses without any fear.
In fact, I actually enjoy the experience now.
What created the shift?
Hands down, it was my practice.
Having a practice that regularly connects me back to myself and techniques that give me the opportunity to regulate my nervous system every day has been the single biggest element.
This is exactly what’s allowed me to - among many things - show up and speak with comfort and confidence because when you’re comfortable within yourself, you trust your voice and your message, you trust your own knowledge and that what you say has value.
Now whenever I feel the anxiety rising again, I quickly tap into somatic techniques to bring me back into my body and into the moment as a resource of safety and resilience.
I take a pause and feel into the sensation at my feet, I breathe slowly.
This works because I know exactly what practises will bring me back to myself each day.
I know exactly what to do to create real regulation within myself and build resilience.
