Yogic Philosophy in Practice: The Niyamas

After the Yamas, the Niyamas are the second of the 8 limbs of yoga, translated as observances.

The niyamas are broken down into five practices, consisting of:

saucha (cleanliness)
santosha (contentment)
tapas (accepting pain as a teacher without causing pain)
svadhyaya (self study)
isvara pranidhana (self-surrender)

The niyamas move from the more material to the most subtle. Through the yamas, we began to abstain from behaviours that were of harm to others & ourselves, with the niyamas, we now begin to bring in practices of self-purification that bring us deeper into ourselves.
